MuleSoft, a provider of one of the world’s leading integration and API platforms, recently reported that 70% of automation initiatives are hampered by security concerns and data silos, as organizations are turning more and more to automation to improve their efficiency and productivity.
However, MuleSoft’s IT and Business Alignment Barometer also revealed opportunities for companies to overcome these challenges and enable faster innovation in their organizations. IT and sales teams working closely together can reduce or even eliminate organizational silos, dramatically reducing time to market.
The report shows that almost 9 in 10 people (87%) say that IT and business alignment has improved over the past 12 months, resulting in a number of benefits, including improved collaboration (64%), operational efficiency (58%) and better customer experience. (54%).

Based on a global study of 2,400 IT Decision Makers (ITDM) and Business Decision Makers (BDM), the MuleSoft IT and Business Alignment Barometer also highlights organizations’ business priorities and challenges over the next 12 months:
Digital imperatives increase adoption of automation
In a fully digital world where you can work from anywhere, it has never been more important to detect and respond to changing market dynamics – and the needs of customers and employees – with speed, agility and efficiency. Automation has become a growing goal for many organizations to promote convenience, speed and lower costs. Organizations report that:
- Operational efficiency is a priority for companies: Improve operational efficiency (54%), create better connected customer experiences (50%), improve productivity (49%), become more agile for change (48%) and become more data-driven (45%) are the priorities of organizations. five business priorities.
- There is automation everywhere: 95% of organizations have implemented or are in the process of implementing automation initiatives, such as streamlined employee onboarding processes, to improve productivity. 93% see automation as a way to create better connected customer experiences and improve operational efficiency.
- IT drives automation initiatives: Just over two-thirds (67%) of organizations say their automation initiatives are IT-driven (that is, driven by IT and available technology).
Security concerns and data silos slow down business priorities
Security and governance, as well as data spread across multiple applications and platforms, continue to challenge automation initiatives and hamper innovation.
- Security concerns are slowing the pace of innovation: The majority (87%) of IT and business leaders say security and governance issues slow the pace of innovation.
- Disparate systems cause security problems: Almost three-quarters (73%) of organizations say that integrating disparate systems has increased their concerns about data security and governance – 31% say they have “significantly” increased their concerns.
- Organizations are still reluctant to empower non-technical users: Most organizations recognize the need to empower sales teams to lighten the operational burden of IT. However, the majority remain suspicious of the security implications; 87% admitted that security concerns at least to some extent prevent them from allowing non-technical users to integrate data sources.
The collaborative innovation model for IT and business drives agility
To overcome integration challenges and become more agile, IT and business teams must work together to co-create value and keep pace with digitization. IT teams can focus on producing secure and governed reusable assets, and empower business teams to onboard and self-service those IT-approved assets to accelerate innovation.
- COVID-19 has sparked new interest in business agility: Over three-quarters (78%) of organizations say improving business agility to stay competitive will be extremely important going forward. This is a notable increase from 68% who said it was a goal before the pandemic.
- IT increasingly drives business outcomes: The majority (88%) of business and IT leaders agree that IT has become even more important to driving business results over the past 12 months. Almost half (48%) say it has become “considerably” more important.
- The value of integration is recognized by the company: Almost nine in 10 BDMs (87%) believe that better integration will help them achieve their business goals – 39% say it would help them “a lot”.
- Gain agility by allowing business users to create connected experiences: The vast majority (86%) of organizations agree that business outcomes would improve if business users could use little or no code to securely connect apps and data on their own to create connected experiences. This ability would enable organizations to improve their productivity (52%), become more data-driven (48%), improve their operational efficiency (48%), create better connected customer experiences (46%) and to become more agile in the face of change (45%).
